How a US Marine Went to Somalia and Became a Warlord
Mohamed Farrah Aidid was one of Somalia's most dangerous and aggressive warlords. He was instrumental in the overthrow of communist dictator Mohamed Siad Barre. After the ouster of Barre, Somalia fell into a period of civil war, where rival factions competed for power, led by former military officers, who became warlords. Aidid's faction became known as the United Somali Congress (USC) in 1991.
Meanwhile, his son, Hussein Farrah Aidid, was busy serving in the United States Marine Corps during Desert Storm. Neither knew the son would follow in his father's footsteps.
The younger Aidid had already immigrated to the United States in 1979 at age 17. After graduating from high school, he joined the Corps and began an eight-year career that would take him to war in Kuwait and to Somalia, first as a Marine and then to lead Somalis.

Mohamed Farrah Hasan Garad (Somali: Maxamed Faarax Xasan Garaad, 'Caydiid Garaad' ; Arabic: محمد فرح حسن عيديد; 15 December 1934 – 1 August 1996), popularly known as General Aidid or Aideed, was a Somali military officer, diplomat and warlord. Educated in both Rome and Moscow, he began his career during the 1950s serving as a police chief in the Italian ruled United Nations trusteeship security forces. Mohamed Farrah Hassan Aidid (Somali: Maxamed Faarax Xasan Caydiid; Arabic: محمد فرح حسن عيديد; 15 December 1934 – 1 August 1996) was a Somaligeneral and diplomat. He was the chairman of the United Somali Congress (USC). Aidid later led the Somali National Alliance (SNA). He was a part of the groups that overthrew and exiled PresidentMohamed Siad Barre's socialist and communist government from Somalia during the Somali Civil War in the early 1990s.
In 1992, Aidid attacked United Nationstroops. This caused him to be named the world’s first Wanted Man of the Unified Task Force. After UN peacekeepers withdrew in 1993, 19 American soldiers were killed by Aidid's forces.[2] They also attacked peacekeepers, caused violence and committed crimes against humanity.[3]
On 1 August 1996, Aidid suffered a heart attack after being wounded. He died at the age of 61.
