Ellis Island! How many future Americans were inspected at the famous immigration center in New York harbor? Nearly 12 million emigrants were “processed” there between 1892 and 1924. The immigration center was closed in November 1954. Lucky me, I arrived in the USA a year after it closed. Ettore Boiardi, born in Piacenza in 1897, arrived on Ellis Island on May 9th, 1914 at the age of 16. He worked with his brother Paolo at the Plaza Hotel in New York and made his way up from apprentice to chef. In 1926, he opened his own restaurant in Cleveland, “Il Giardino d’Italia”.
