- Just like so many pet parents, Susan learned the 'truth' about pet food the hard way.Suddenly at 8 years old, Sam - Susan's beloved dog, showed a tumor on her pelvic bone.
- Susan Thixton is a pet food consumer advocate - one of just a handful of advocates in the US that fight to hold the pet food industry accountable.

Hucksters are individuals who claims to have all of the answers; that “main stream” industries are corrupt profiteers out to harm you or your pet’s health for financial gain; and that only be listening to them (the Huckster) and/or by buying their products will you and your pet live long happy and healthy lives. So basically everyone else is lying/conspiring except for them. Sounds a bit to me like Kaa from the Jungle Book as he tries to wrap Mowgli up for dinner, “trussssst in me…”.
How I feel about Hucksters…
Even if you believe that large corporation (be it food or pharmaceutical companies for pets or people) are solely driven by profit, how much long-term profit is there in harming your customer? Small corporations become large corporation because they provide a service or product that people (the ones with the wallets) want to purchase. There are numerous business books written on this very topic. Corporations with any financial and business sense want those wallet holders buying products for as long as physically possible. About TruthaboutPetFood.com
(and About Susan Thixton, the Caped Crusader for Safe Pet Food)
Animals have always been a big part of my life. My first dog as a child was a red Doberman named Duke that I competed in obedience trials with. Back then, it was standard to teach dogs using force (do this or I’ll hurt you methods). Even at 11 years old, and in defiance of those who were teaching me ‘how to train my dog’, I refused to hurt my best friend. My kind methods of training paid off, out of a possible 200 points, we consistently scored 199 and 199 1/2 in competitions. Duke was my best friend and he was treated with respect; he returned the love ten fold.
At 15, my parents bought me a horse for my birthday. I went from showing dogs to showing horses. My respect of animals continued with my horses; I had the number one Quarter Horse gelding (neutered male horse) in the State of Kentucky for several years. I went to college on a horsemanship scholarship; taking three horses with me to school. A friend teases me that ‘normal’ girls go to college

Don't Be a Dick to Your Dog
Thirty years ago, a vet told Susan Thixton that dog food had given her dog bone cancer, and the dog had two weeks to live. "That day changed my life," she said. She dove into researching pet food, and found an industry doing its best to keep its practices opaque to pet owners. Too often, she discovered, we are literally feeding our dogs garbage. In the decades since, Susan has become a full time blogger on the subject and a consumer advocate, lobbying to try to improve the quality of the food we feed our pets. She and Annie discuss the difference the precise definitions of terms like "food" and "feed," "with" and "meal," and Susan reveals what she feels is the single most important thing to look for when selecting a pet food. This episode may forever change how you think about dog food.
