Elder L. Tom Perry, who had served as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since 1974, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2015. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Lee, who passed away in 1974, and their daughter, who passed away in 1983. Tom and Virginia are the parents of three children. He is survived by two children and his second wife, Barbara Taylor Dayton, whom Elder Perry married in 1976.


Born of Goodly Parents

Lowell Tom Perry was born August 5, 1922, in Logan, Utah, USA, to Leslie Thomas and Nora Sonne Perry. He was one of six children in the family. Tom’s parents loved and taught the gospel in their home every chance they could. This righteous upbringing was a source of strength to Elder Perry his whole life.

Lee Tom Perry

Lee Tom Perry (born April 29, 1951) is a business professor, Latter-day Saint church leader, and hymnwriter.

He is the son of L. Tom Perry, who was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 1974 until his death in 2015.

As a young man, Perry served an LDS Church mission in the Japan West Mission. He was associate dean of the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University (BYU) from 1998 to 2005.[1] From 1991 to 1994, he served as president of the BYU 3rd Stake. From 2005 to 2008, Perry was president of the CaliforniaRoseville Mission, and from 2010 to 2014 he was a member of the general board of the LDS Church's Sunday School.[2]

Perry wrote the words to "As Now We Take The Sacrament", which is hymn number 169 in the 1985 EnglishLDS Church hymnal.

Career

Perry holds a doctorate in administration sciences from Yale University.[1] He entered Yale in the second year of its graduate program in management. After obtaining a Ph.D. in 1981,

Elder L. Tom Perry, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was called to his present Church position April 6, 1974, after serving as an Assistant to the Twelve since 1972.

Elder Perry’s Church service began with a mission to the Northern States in 1942, after which he served for two years with the Marines in the Pacific. Subsequent Church positions include counselor in a bishopric in Lewiston, Idaho; counselor in a stake presidency in Sacramento, California; high councilor in the New York Stake; and president of the Boston Stake.

He was born August 5, 1922, in Logan, Utah, to Leslie Thomas and Nora Sonne Perry.

He received his B.S. degree in finance from Utah State University in 1949 and did graduate work there. His professional career was spent in the retail business, where he served as vice president and treasurer in companies located in Idaho, California, New York, and Massachusetts.
