In April of 2004, four young boys, in their early twenties, entered a recording studioin Lainchaurto record a few of their originals. Little did they know, the album would go on to become a rage amongst Nepali music listeners.
What started as an impromptu decision propelled the band into fame.
Formed in 1998 as a three-piece school band, Albatross is a Kathmandu-based Nepali rock band celebrated for theirdistinct sounds and relatable lyrics. A household name, synonymous with rock music in Nepal, the band comprises four members—Sirish Dali, Sunny Manandhar, Avaya Siddhi Bajracharya and Kismat D Shrestha.
While most consider their 2005 release ‘Jo Jas Sanga Sambandhhit Chha’to be their debut album, the band had released an album—‘Hi: Fly’—prior. But that album was far from what listeners today relate the sound of Albatross to. The 1999 release was a heavy rock/metal album.

Nepali rock band from Kathmandu, Nepal. Formed in 1998 as a three-piece school band, Albatross has made a landmark in the Nepali music scene. It transcend the sound of Nepali Alternative music, each of which has significantly influenced the music which the band creates. The band's fast tempos, signature chord progression and contemporary compositions has made them one of the pioneers of rock music in Nepal.

We mostly know about the front face of the artists, whereas we usually don’t know about the years of struggles and the things they have gone through in their life to reach the stage they are in today. This #story series will try to bring out their stories to the community.
For this First Episode of Artist Story series, we talked with Sunny Manandhar, the co-founder and the guitarist of the well-renowned band Albatross. He was born in 1981 and he spent his childhood days in Pako, New Road, Kathmandu. He founded the band with Avaya S. Bajracharya in late 1998.

What was the most challenging thing when you started?
