Born Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe Deneuville to wealthy parents at Saint-Omer, Pas-de-Calais, he earned his degree of bachelier ès-lettres, and in 1856 entered the naval school at Lorient in spite of family opposition.

Adolphe De Neuville came from a wealthy family, he earned his of bachelor of letters degree from a university, and in spite of family opposition, he wanted to join the navy and entered the naval school at Lorient at age of twenty-one, where his artistic instincts bloomed.

He wanted to study more but was discouraged by several reputable painters, finally, he was admitted to the studio of François-Edouard Picot, but Alphonse de Neuville did not remain there long. He was painting by himself when he produced his first picture, The Fifth Battalion of Chasseurs at the Gervais Battery one of the last assaults on Sébastopol.

He participated in illustrating the Hetzel editions of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. He also illustrated Le Tour du Monde and Guizot's History of France. At the same time, he painted a number of remarkable pictures, The Attack in the Streets of Magenta by Zouaves and the Light Horse, A Zouave Sentinel, The Battle of San Lorenzo, and Dismounted Cavalry crossing the Tchernaia. Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville, a French painter and illustrator, died May 18, 1885, at the age of 50. Many of de Neuville's paintings are well known, but they primarily depict military subjects – battles, sieges, and the life – which would never gain him admittance to the ranks of Scientists of the Day. Fortunately, when he was young and not yet established, he did a certain amount of book illustration. Jules Verne's Vingt mille lieues sous le mers (Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea) was having a successful run in the serial, Magasin d'éducation et de récréation, published by Pierre-Jules Hetzel. The series run started in 1869, and was unillustrated; Hetzel realized very quickly that it would be a best-seller in book form, especially with illustrations, and he commissioned de Neuvillle,

Biography

Alphonse-Marie de Neuville was, along with Ernest Meissonier and Edouard Detaille, one of the leading military painters in France in the second half of the 19th century. At the onset of his career he worked as an illustrator, providing designs to accompany such books as Guizot’s Histoire de France. He began painting military scenes in 1858, and the following year made his Salon debut with two paintings of The Siege of Sebastopol. It was not until the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870, however, that de Neuville came fully into his own. During the siege of Paris, the artist was attached to a unit defending the outskirts of the city at Le Bourget, and saw the action and effects of the war at close hand. For the rest of his career de Neuville made a particular specialty of scenes from the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871, in which the emphasis was not on the battles themselves but on the human drama.
