To many families around the world Phoebe Gilman is a beloved children’s book author and illustrator. To our family she is a beloved mom and grandma. Sadly, she passed away in 2002 but we are lucky she left behind such a meaningful legacy in her books, connecting us with her and her readers. I’m Phoebe’s daughter Melissa. I grew up posing for sketches that turned into the pages of books. I came home from camp to find my room had been transformed into Jillian’s room and I was the lucky kid who always had unique new stories told to me every night when getting tucked into bed. Myself and Phoebe’s much adored granddaughter Emily are in the process of taking over administration of Phoebe’s page. In the coming days we will post individual introductions so you can get to know us! We’re excited to read all the messages that have been sent and answer any questions you may have. Please be patient as we go through this transition. We hope to share lots of behind the scenes fun about Phoebe’s stories and our lives together with you soon.

What can I tell you about myself? I like to make up stories and draw pictures. I like to go ice skating, to the movies and I love reading books.
I was born and grew up in the Bronx, New York. My Mother loved to read so it was only natural that my brothers and I got our own library cards as soon as we were able to print our names. My favorite books were fairy tales. When the pictures didn't match the images that the words had painted in my head, I would cover them up with my hands. I still do that.
I prefer the words to the pictures, which is a little odd since I think of myself as an artist rather than a writer. All of my formal training has been in art. I went to The High School of Art and Design. From there, it was a short skip and a jump What can I tell you about myself? I like to make up stories and draw pictures.
