The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona Campus along with the entire island is mourning the passing of another member of our family, veteran journalist, communications consultant and playwright The Honourable Barbara Joy Gloudon (nee Goodison), OD, OJ, IOJ, D.Litt (Hon) who transitioned on May 11, 2022.

She was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) by The UWI on November 8, 2003, for her unparalleled contribution to journalism.

As the country remembers Barbara Gloudon, the playwright, journalist and radio talk-show host who passed away on Wednesday night, here are 10 things to know about her.

  1. She was born Barbara Joy Goodison in 1935 to Doris (née Harvey) and Vivian M Goodison. She grew up in Malvern, St Elizabeth. Her father worked as a chauffeur and mechanic.
  2. On April 23, 1960, she married chemist and food technologist, Ancile Gloudon, a native of Port of Spain, Trinidad. The couple had three children, Lisa, Jason and Anya.
  3. One of her sisters, Lorna Goodison, is the first female Poet Laureate of Jamaica.
  4. A distinguished journalist, Gloudon was conferred with the Order of Distinction in the officer class in 1975 for her contribution to journalism, and with the Order of Jamaica in 1992. 
  5. She was inducted into the Jamaican Press Association Hall of Fame in 2013. She had also been honoured with two Seprod Awards from the Press Association of Jamaica.

    Barbara Joy GloudonODOJIOJ (née Goodison; 5 February 1935[1] – 11 May 2022) was a Jamaican writer. She received two Seprod Awards from the Press Association of Jamaica and Order of Distinction. Gloudon was a scriptwriter for Jamaica's Little Theatre Movement (LTM)[2] and wrote radio drama. She hosted a radio talk show for thirty years and became chair of the LTM. She was granted the Order of Jamaica in 1992 and became a fellow of the Institute of Jamaica in 2012.

    Barbara Joy Goodison was the eldest of nine siblings, born in Malvern, Saint Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica, to Doris (née Harvey) and Vivian M.
