Father John Patrick Wessel was a dynamic young Roman Catholic parish priest and a charismatic spiritual teacher and leader of youth. Born in 1939 in Mount Holly, New Jersey, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1965 in the Diocese of Trenton. His first assignment was Blessed Sacrament Church, Trenton, until his transfer in September 1971 to St. Joseph ́s Church, Toms River. In December 1971, Father Wessel was shot by a distraught young man whom, with priestly concern, he was attempting to assist. He was proposed for canonization shortly after his death. This book recounts the dramatic events leading up to Father Wessel ́s shooting and death, while celebrating his exemplary and joyous life. It is wonderful, inspirational reading for those of all faiths.

A fifteenth-century Dutchtheologian, born at Gröningen in 1420; died there on 4 Oct., 1489. He was educated at Zwolle and lived in the seminary of the Brothers of the Common Life. From 1449 he studied at the University of Cologne, and graduated master of arts there. In 1456-7 he was temporary professor of arts at the University of Heidelberg. About the beginning of 1458 he went to Paris, intending to induce two celebrated teachers from the Netherlands, then lecturing at Paris, to change from Formalism to Realism, which he advocated zealously. He himself, however, was converted to Formalism, and then adopted Nominalism, to which he afterwards adhered. Johan Herman Wessel (6 October 1742 – 29 December 1785) was an 18th-century Danish-Norwegian poet, satirist and playwright. His written work was characterized by the use of parody and satiric wit.^[1]

Biography

Wessel was born and raised at Vestby in Akershus, Norway. He was the son of Jonas Wessel (1707–1785) and Helene Maria Schumacher (1715–1789). His father was a parish priest. He was one of thirteen children in a family. His younger brothers included mathematician Caspar Wessel (1745–1818) and jurist Ole Christopher Wessel (1744–1794) His sister-in-law was landowner Maren Juel (1749–1815) and naval hero Peter Tordenskjold (1690–1720) was his great uncle.

He entered attended Oslo Cathedral School in 1757 followed by the University of Copenhagen in 1761. At the university, he studied foreign languages. He later made a living principally as a tutor and translator. He lived most of his somewhat bohemian life in Copenhagen, dependent on casual work and weakened by bad health and dri
