With a majority vote of 296-3, Pheu Thai number one party-list MP Yingluck Shinawatra was bestowed the title of the 28th Prime Minister of Thailand by the House of Representatives on 5 August 2011. Despite being a new face in politics, she has leapfrogged to the country’s top post past several of her seniors.

Ms Yingluck was born on 21 June 1967 as the youngest of ten offspring of Mr Lert and Ms Yindi Shinawatra. Among her elder siblings are self-exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Ms Yaowapa Wongsawat, wife of former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat.

Ms Yingluck is in a common-law marriage with Mr Anusorn Amornchat, Executive Director of M-Link Asia Corporation Plc and former Executive of the Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group. They have one son, named Supasek Amornchat.

Born and raised in Chiang Mai province, she received her lower secondary education at Regina Coeli College and higher secondary education at Yupparaj College. She graduated from Chiang Mai University in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Public Administration before earning her

Prime Minister of Thailand from 2011 to 2014

Yingluck ShinawatraMPChMWM (Thai: ยิ่งลักษณ์ ชินวัตร, RTGS: Yinglak Chinnawat, pronounced[jîŋ.láktɕʰīn.nā.wát]; born 21 June 1967) is a Thai businesswoman, politician and a member of the Pheu Thai Party who became the 28th prime minister of Thailand following the 2011 election. Yingluck was Thailand's first female prime minister and its youngest in over 60 years. She was removed from office on 7 May 2014 by a Constitutional Court decision.[1][2]

Born in Chiang Mai Province into a wealthy family of HakkaChinese descent,[3][4] Yingluck Shinawatra earned a bachelor's degree from Chiang Mai University and a master's degree from Kentucky State University, both in public administration.[5] She then became an executive in the businesses founded by her elder brother, Thaksin Shinawatra and later became the president of property developerSC Asset and managing director of Advanced Info Service. Profile: Yingluck Shinawatra

Born in 1967, Yingluck Shinawatra first carved out a career in the corporate world before joining politics.

She was managing director of AIS, the telecommunications firm her brother founded, and managing director of SC Asset Company, a family firm involved in property.

Before the 2011 election, Ms Yingluck, who has two degrees in politics, had never run for office or held a government post.

Critics were quick to point out her political inexperience, saying her main qualification appeared to be the fact that she was the youngest sister of Mr Thaksin, the billionaire who was ousted as prime minister by the military in 2006 and jailed in absentia for corruption.

They suggested her primary role was to marshal the Thaksin faithful - the mainly poor rural voters who kept him in power - and then serve as his proxy as he governed from overseas exile.

Ms Yingluck performed well on the campaign trail - people seemed to warm to her. The numerous supporters of Mr Thaksin backed her party Pheu Thai - which her brother founded - in 2011 polls.
