Run Baby Run is one of the best books I've read written by a Christian, and without a doubt, one of the best books I have yet to read.

It's a powerful testimony of a man whose hardened heart could only be broken through by relentless love. The main character, Nicky Cruz, started life out bitter and angry, having been born into a family who practiced witchcraft. He hit the streets of New York City at fifteen, thieving, drinking, attacking, and it wasn't three years later when his life changed in a drastic way.
There was so much hurt buried in Cruz's heart, that it allowed the reader to resonate to a degree, while still his sins could not be excused. There was so much love, and light that came afterwards when he came to Christ. Though it's necessary to say things didn't become automatically easy for him in the aftermath.

His parents were heavily involved in Santeria, and as such, Nicky was the victim of repeated physical abuse and rejection at their hands. In an attempt to escape his violent upbringing, Nicky fled to New York City in the mid 50s where he soon got caught up in the gang violence that was sweeping the city. Fearless and seemingly immune to physical pain, Cruz rose through the ranks of the notorious Mau Mau gang in Fort Greene, Brooklyn to become their War Lord. Nicky Cruz was born on December 6, 1938, in Puerto Rico.

His parents practiced witchcraftThe activity of performing magic, especially for evil purposes, with the use of spells. and as one of nineteen children he endured severe physical and mental abuse.

He grew up in a very tough neighbourhood in Puerto Rico.

Aged fifteen, his parents sent him to live with an older brother in New York City. He soon ran away and joined the notorious Brooklyn street gang - the Mau Maus, quickly rising to become their president. The gang ruled the New York streets by fear.

Lost in a cycle of drugs, alcohol and violence, his life took a tragic turn after a fellow gang member was stabbed, beaten, and died in Nicky’s arms.

Nicky's life changed when he met David Wilkerson, a preacher, at a Christian outreach meeting in his neighbourhood. Wilkerson told Cruz that Jesus would never stop loving him.
