Gary J. Volesky

American former lieutenant general

Gary J. Volesky (born September 7, 1961) is a retired United States Armylieutenant general who commanded I Corps from 2017 to 2020. He previously served as commander of the 101st Airborne Division and commander of the American ground forces in Iraq as part of Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve.[2] Volesky retired in February 2020, being succeeded by Lieutenant General Randy George as commander of I Corps.

Biography

From Spokane, Washington, Volesky graduated from Ferris High School in 1979. In 1983, he earned a bachelor's degree in military science from Eastern Washington University.[3] He followed this with a master's degree in Near and Middle Eastern Studies from Princeton University. He graduated from the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and earned another master's degree at the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.[4]

Gary J. Volesky was born in Spokane, Washington in 1961, and he joined the US Army in 1983, serving in the Middle East in the Gulf War, Iraq War, Afghanistan War, and Operation Inherent Resolve. He was awarded a Silver Star for his actions at the start of the Siege of Sadr City in April 2004, and he was appointed to command the US 101st Airborne Division in 2014. He later commanded the American ground forces in Iraq during Operation Inherent Resolve, and he commanded I Corps from 2017 to 2020.

The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) has opened a new chapter in its rendezvous with destiny. Maj. Gen. Gary J. Volesky, the 45th commanding general of the 101st, placed the division in the hands of Maj. Gen. Andrew P. Poppas, the incoming division commander, during a change of command ceremony Jan. 19, 2017.

During the ceremony, Lt. Gen. Stephen J. Townsend, XVIII Airborne Corps commander, praised Volesky's leadership during his command.

"Our Army couldn't have chosen a better leader to command this division two and a half years ago than Gary Volesky," Townsend said. "During his watch, elements of the 101st have deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Liberia and a whole list of other nations around the world in support of both combat and shaping operations for our nation."

The 101st Airborne Division also deployed twice as a headquarters under Volesky's command: first as the Joint Forces Command during Operation United Assistance in Liberia, and again as the Combined Joint Forces Land Compone
