Cold specks neuroplasticity

Cold Specks has mixed crackling, pared-down guitar blues, gothic soul, gospel and warm electronics in three startling albums which garnered Polaris and Juno Prize nominations: 2012’s I Predict A Graceful Expulsion, 2014’s Neuroplasticity and 2017’s Fool’s Paradise.

Her musical stretch is vast, she has worked with SwansMassiveAttack and Moby, performed at Joni Mitchell’s birthday concert and gave an unforgettable acapella performance on Later… with Jools Holland in 2011. • Born In

    Etobicoke, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Cold Specks is Canadian musician Al Spx from Etobicoke, Canada, who now lives in London. Cold Specks' music is steeped in the musical traditions of the Deep South. No wonder then that Al cites the Lomax Field Recordings and James Carr as influences along with Bill Callahan and Tom Waits. With a voice that evokes the 'spirit feel' of Mahalia Jackson and the visceral tones of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Cold Specks' sparse arrangements and chain-gang rhythms stop you dead in your tracks.

Ladan Hussein, known on stage as Cold Specks has returned with her most personal work yet. The artist recognized for her twistedly enthralling lyrics and distinctive soulful voice, has dug deep and returned to her roots. In this masterful body of work, Cold Specks intimately explores her identity as a Somali-Canadian woman. She’s unveiled and allowed herself to stretch her palette thematically. The rawness that’s deemed Cold Specks a dark soul, has revealed itself to be a cathartic after glow, illuminating the sort of light born through healing.

Like waves thrashing in a chaotic sea in the middle of nowhere, Fool’s Paradise encapsulates the naturalness of existing during difficult times. We find Ladan rejoicing the survival of those she loves while mourning for the sorrow that continues to linger after it has beckoned its doom.
