Sometimes I think we respond to Marilyn Monroe as strongly as we do not because of her beauty or her body but because of her desperation, which was implacable in the face of fame, fortune, and the love of celebrated men. Every few years, she comes around again, the subject of yet another revelatory book (there are more than a hundred to date) or of a newly discovered series of photographs. We will never have enough of Monroe, in part because there is never sufficient explanation for the commotions of her soul, and in part because we will never tire of hearing about the native sadness behind the construction of glamour. The damaged creature behind the pinup, the neglected foster child who became a blond vision in sequins: her story has entered the realm of myth. Its unhappy ending makes her less the exemplary heroine of a fairy tale than its cautionary victim—a glittery example of female entrapment in the male star-making machinery.

Marilyn D. Morrow, 90, Rock Island, IL passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at Friendship Manor in Rock Island. There will be a visitation 9:30-10:30 with a memorial service following at 10:30 AM on Friday, July 14, 2023 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island. Interment at Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials preferred to the family.

Marilyn was born on May 13, 1933 to Clarence and Beulah (Webb) Blacker in Monticello, IL. She spent her early childhood there before she moved to the Quad Cities where she graduated from Rock Island High School.

On June 16, 1951 she was united in marriage to Lecil Morrow Jr. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. The couple made their home in Rock Island where they raised their two children. Marilyn was a homemaker and for many years, worked as a hostess and dietary aide for Friendship Manor. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Marilyn enjoyed tending to the flowers in her garden, reading, and spending time with her dog.

Marilyn S. Morrow, 83, of New Cumberland, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2020 in Geisinger Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill surrounded by her loving family.

She was a retired Front End Manager with BJ’s Wholesale Club. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her husband in Florida and Delaware. Marilyn attended Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mechanicsburg.

Marilyn was born in Mahaffey, PA, the daughter of the late Albert L. and Opal (Eastham) Shaw. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings Elinor Boyer, Eunice Lightner, Dale Shaw and Neal Shaw, and grandson Timothy Sheaffer Jr.

She is survived by her husband of more than 34 years, Edward E. Morrow; daughters Rhonda Brunner (Brett) and Linda Sancenito (John); sons, Randal Zimmerman (Kimberly) and Timothy Sheaffer (Sharon); step sons, Michael Morrow (Barbara), Edward “Scott” Morrow (Marta), Eric Morrow (Anne) and Douglas Morrow (Pamela); sister Lois Crull; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; and nine step great grandchildren.
