During her tenure at the National Zoological Park, Lisa Stevens propelled the Zoo’s giant panda program to the forefront of global conservation efforts. At the same time, she also acted as a role model to inspire the next generation to continue these important efforts.
Stevens’ love for animals began during her childhood. With her father in the Army, their family traveled frequently, and she spent much of her childhood in Southeast Asia, where she became fascinated with the diverse array of local insects and reptiles. Recognizing her fascination, Stevens’ parents encouraged her passion with pet dogs, cats, and birds and horseback riding lessons. At the riding stables, the veterinarians working with the horses sparked Stevens’ interest in veterinary science.
Stevens earned her bachelor’s degree in zoology and pre-veterinary medicine at Michigan State University and began working as an animal keeper at the National Zoological Park in 1978. Lisa Marie Stevens is an American retired zoologist who served as the senior curator for mammals, and managed both the giant panda program and the primate program, at the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoo. She worked at the National Zoo from 1978 to her retirement in 2011.[1] She managed the National Zoo's panda breeding program as early as 1987, but rose to national prominence following the birth of panda cub Tai Shan in 2005.[2]
Internationally known as "the Panda Lady,"[3] her responsibilities as a curator at the National Zoo included overseeing the budget, exhibit design, construction, and supervising personnel. She was also responsible for the zoo's primates, including gorillas, orangutans, gibbons, and macaques.[4] She is included in the American Association for the Advancement of Science's Spotlight on African American Scientists.[5]

Lisa Stevens is an American editor, CEO and founder of Paizo Publishing, and COO of Goblinworks. She began her career in games in the 1980s, working with Jonathan Tweet and Mark Rein-Hagen to help produce the tabletop roleplaying game Ars Magica. She later worked at White Wolf and Wizards of the Coast before founding Paizo. She announced her gradual retirement from her role in June 2020.
Education
Stevens attended Saint Olaf College, where she met game designers Jonathan Tweet and Mark Rein-Hagen.[1] Stevens received an MBA from the University of Washington.[2] After graduating from St. Olaf, she continued to spend time on campus running Dungeons & Dragons games.[3]: 232
