Le Ba Dang, who went by 'Lebadang' as well as by the alias, 'Hoi', was born on June 27, 1921 in Bich-La-Dong, Hue province, Vietnam.

Lebadang

Lebadang was born in 1921 in Bich-La-Dong, a village along the Huong River in Quang-Tri Province of Hue, Vietnam. He expressed himself through a variety of media, including painting, watercolor, sculpture, jewelry and graphic works. He often combined various media, creating sculptural, highly textured artwork.

Founder and CEO of Park West Gallery, Albert Scaglione, knew the artist for more than 30 years. Lebadang continued to create until his passing despite being more than 90 years old. His wife, Myshu, told Mr. Scaglione, “Life is a sinking ship and work is a lifeboat.” This described her husband perfectly.

“I don’t just use brushes to paint on canvas, but mix pasteboard, paint and limestone and spread my works on large pieces of thick burlap,” Lebadang once said. “So, my paintings usually look rough and irregular in shape, but I think they are strange in a beautiful way. It is often a marriage between different kinds of art, painting, and sculpture, as well as installation art and architecture.”

Lebadang was a Vietnamese Asian Modern & Contemporary artist who was born in 1921. Numerous key galleries and museums such as Musée Cernuschi have featured Lebadang's work in the past.Lebadang's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from 10 USD to 26,007 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. Since 2001 the record price for this artist at auction is 26,007 USD for Composition, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong in 2020. Hoi Lebadang

(1922-2015)

Lebadang (Hoi) was born in Quang Tri, Vietnam in 1922. He moved to France in 1939 to pursue an art career at Ecole de Beaus Arts de Toulouse. While studying there he was awarded prizes for painting, drawing, and sculpture and won his first commission.

By 1950 the Paris art community had recognized Lebadang's work, appreciating the blend of European and Far Eastern culture and philosophies reflected in it. The director of the Far Eastern Department at UNESCO commissioned him to illustrate a book of poetry, published by Editions Euros.

Lebadang was first represented in the United States, in 1966, with an exhibition of his paintings at the Cincinnati Art Museum. In describing his art today critics remark that it incorporates everyday subjects into dream-like expressions of thought. Lebadang, an accomplished printmaker, favors the techniques of etching, lithograph, and serigraph. He also has done lithographs using the name Hoi.
